Prenatals—Are They All the Same? What Do I Really Need?

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

It’s a new year – a new you – and maybe even a new baby! Whatever your situation, you can benefit from a good prenatal supplement. But not all prenatals are alike!

protein shakes supplements

Say what? The standard of prenatal nutrition varies from company to company and from pill to gel cap to liquid drink to protein shake (think Mommi). The levels and source of vitamins are the important things to watch for in making sure you are getting everything your baby needs (and you too) for a healthy pregnancy.

So I spent a little bit of time yesterday with our awesome CMO—Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Yvonne Bohn. We talked about all sorts of fun things but most importantly and what I wanted to share here is what are the trends for prenatals in 2016?

  1. Lower levels (or elimination) of Vitamin A – if you were cursed with acne like I was when I was a teenager, you are likely familiar with Accutane and/or Retin-A – both strong in Vitamin A, to clear up your skin. If you endured these treatments you also probably had to take pregnancy tests for the duration because those high levels of A can lead to birth defects.

  2. Gummies – who doesn’t like a gummy bear and especially when it’s good for you! These little gummies of goodness taste great and give you the prenatals and… get this… the DHA (fish oil no less) you need during pregnancy. But beware – you have to take 2 to get the daily recommended value and they don’t have iron because iron simply doesn’t get the gummy to gum. And many have high levels of sugar. So read the label and be mindful that you may need to take an extra iron supplement.

  3. Smaller size pills – for some reason if you don’t normally have a hard time taking a horse pill, you definitely do during pregnancy. Smaller-sized vitamins are becoming more popular – just make sure they are still packed with the levels you need to optimize nutrition.

  4. Drinkable prenatals – there are many studies on the positive effect of getting your vitamins in liquid form – they absorb quicker, act faster, and help with nausea that often hits shortly after taking large pills that tend to sit in your stomach and slowly dissolve.

Staying informed is so important for new health trends during pregnancy but there is a lot of noise out there and things change ALL the time – for a good rule of thumb we love Web MD’s Guide to Prenatal-Vitamins for what proper prenatal nutrition looks like. If you want to be really secure in your choices, compare this against the supplement facts on your prenatal of choice.

And “bottom’s up” if that includes a Mommi prenatal protein shake!! 🙂

Grateful for the Smallest Things #CHOOSEGRATITUDE

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Last night we ran a tweet chat—we were a small but might group. The topic #choosegratitude.

Here are the 7 questions we asked over a period of 30 minutes! A few answers stood out as pretty powerful. We thought we’d share them with you.

Q1: Why do you #ChooseGratitude as a mom or a dad?

@erinschurtz – A1: Because the alternative makes life miserable… I’ve been there. It’s better to #choosegratitude

Q2: Who is someone you are grateful for that has helped in your role as a mom or dad?

@msbubbles3A2: My great grandmother for me—always there for me – teaching with patience

Q3: What are you most grateful for as a dad or a mom?

@erinschurtz A3: Oh my gosh EVERY DAY I’m grateful my kids love each other. It makes the chaos more manageable!

Q4: Give us your best advice on how to turn a negative attitude upside down in parenting?

 – A4: Taking a step back and analyzing the situation helps!!

Q5: What are you most grateful for during pregnancy?

@MommaTBlog – A5: I was grateful for a smooth pregnancy with my first.

@happygirlcom  – A5: That both of us survived! My pregnancy was very high risk, only 9 other cases in the world.

Q6: How can we show gratitude to our husband/wife/partner in motherhood?

@JennellBStewart – A6:lots of hugs and kisses. Celebrating being great parents. Always telling him he’s a great dad.

Of course we needed to know what an adventure day date was…Tiara told us “anything from hiking, mtn biking or even snowboarding. Options are endless!”

Q7: How can we teach gratitude to our kids?

@JennellBStewart – A7: Lead by example, give selflessly, consider others first.

So as you can see sometimes it is just simple things that take up the most room in your heart.

It’s Holiday Time—Let the Party Begin: Egg-Not Nog

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

There are so many wonderful flavors and spices to help you with your holiday treats and libations! Think pumpkin, cranberry, cinnamon, gingerbread, even nutmeg. And then of course, there is that love to hate holiday drink—egg nog.  Traditional holiday egg nog includes: heavy cream, egg yolks, sugar alcohol, oh and more sugar and maybe even bourbon. Come on, we know pregnant and nursing moms stay away from alcohol and let’s not even talk about loading up on all that sugar!

Luckily the great creators over at Nutrition Stripped have reworked this festive holiday drink and bring you the Egg-NOT Nog.  It is full of all sorts of great things like almond milk, cashews, macadamia nuts, warming spices, and even a hint of bourbon (if you are cleared for alcohol). Nutrition Stripped delivers this recipe way better than we ever could. So bump on over to Nutrition Stripped and prepare to create a holiday delight. Oh and just a side note, we at Mommi would also toss in 2 scoops of Vanilla, Mommi 3-in-1 protein to give this drink just the right amount of holiday boost.

Cold Weather Skin Issues? Nine Naturals Has You Covered

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

One of the best things about being part of Mommi, besides all the great ways we help women simplify their nutrition and take care of themselves and their babies, is how we get to team up with so many awesome Mom-centric brands.  And Nine Naturals is one company that we all really enjoy. They truly make beauty simple, smart and safe for moms and moms-to-be.

Today Nine Naturals shares a few of the lessor known elixirs and help you understand just what these plant-based oils can do for your “pregnancy glow”.

OilSpill

The physical changes that your body undergoes during pregnancy—swelling, stretching, and shining (AKA, “pregnancy glow”)—can all be controlled and/or comforted by indulging your skin in plant-based oils. Especially during the fall and winter seasons, when cold weather strikes and these issues are exacerbated, these natural elixirs can also prevent and soothe cracked, wind burned and chapped skin.

Plant-based oils are not only non-toxic and therefore, pregnancy-safe, they are also rich in natural antioxidants and vitamins, making them a powerful, all-natural alternative to chemical-laden drugstore moisturizers and skin treatments. Botanical plant materials are non-greasy and non-comedogenic, making them safe for all skin types, as well as easily absorbed into the dermal layers of the skin. They defend the skin’s lipid barrier from environmental pollution, and act as a humectant to keep the skin moist. You can use botanical oils singularly or combine them with other botanical oils–and even makeup–to maximize skin care health.

Argan and coconut oils, while both tremendously beneficial to skin, are only two of the many plant-based oils that can pack a punch with only a tiny drop. Here are six lesser-known oils that can cleanse, moisturize and reduce skin imperfections:

Borage Seed Oil: Produced from the Borage blossom, Borage oil contains essential fatty acids, including the highest naturally found concentration of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)—an omega-6 fatty acid—that, when processed by the body, is transformed into a hormone like substance that inhibits inflammation. Used to reduce redness and minimize the appearance of stretch marks, this oil can be found in Nine Naturals Vanilla + Geranium Regenerative Belly Butter.

Tamanu Seed Oil: Tamanu oil, sourced from Southeast Asia, helps heal wounds and promote the generation of new tissue—a process known as cicatrization. This oil contains three type of lipids—neutral lipids, glycolipids, and phospholipids—in addition to calophyllic acid and calophyllife, as well as four fatty acids. All of tamanu oil’s components render it a superior non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, which is why it is a featured ingredient in Nine Naturals’ Natural Belly Oil.

Mango Butter Seed Oil: Cold-pressed mango butter seed oil—a great source of essential fatty acids, including linoleic and oleic acids—contains tannins that give the oil anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Commonly used as a base ingredient in body care products, mango butter seed oil can soothe dry, chapped skin, as well as help combat eczema and dermatitis. Find it in both Nine Naturals Simply Natural Lip Balm and Repairing Body Balm.

Evening Primrose Oil: An essential ingredient in Nine Naturals Vanilla + Geranium Regenerative Belly Butter, evening primrose oil contains Vitamin E, GLA—one of the body’s essential fatty acids—and phenylalanine—a compound that can aid in pain relief.

unnamed

Avocado Oil: Extracted from the flesh of the avocado fruit, the super emollient avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, D, and E, lecithin, and potassium. The deeply penetrating oil, which is an ingredient in Nine Naturals Citrus + Geranium Soothing Body Wash, has anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and cellular regenerative properties, making it ideal for relieving dry skin and nourishing aging skin.

Jojoba Seed Oil: Native to the Sonoran and Mojave deserts, this fatty-acid rich liquid wax, which is an ingredient in Nine Naturals’ Natural Belly Oil, is most similar in molecular structure to sebum—the oil that your skin’s sebaceous glands produce—therefore, with continued use it will balance out your own oil production.

Experiment with a variety of plant-based oils to discover which one (or two, or three) is best for addressing your specific skin and body care needs. For a limited time, Nine Naturals is offering Mommi readers 15% OFF any Nine Naturals order. Use code MOMMI15 at checkout and cheers to indulging your skin this winter!

You Aren’t Acting Like Your Usual, Sweet Self Lately… and Other Lessons About Gratitude

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr
I was told the other day “You aren’t acting like your usual, sweet self lately… and it’s starting to bother me.” Bother you??? Well here is the thing – I’m bothered by just about everything lately. Here are a select few (obviously this stuff is on my mind, A LOT):
  • The fact that I wake up every time one of my kids even stirs during the night… so therefore I am tired all the time.
  • I only want to eat chips and I’m still starving unless I eat an entire bag of chips.
  • I’m judged for still breastfeeding my 6 month old son, and I’m judged when I consider stopping.
  • My 2 year old has become an artist and left her mark on the world in the form of marker, crayon and nail polish scribbles all over our walls and carpet.
  • All these fun ideas I have for new Mommi products take about 3 times as long to produce as I think they should.
  • I love working and I am proud of the work we have accomplished as a team at Mommi but I constantly feel like I’m inadequate as a mother and can’t figure out how to balance both so I can stop feeling guilty.
And I could go on and on actually… which is kind of embarrassing. But true.
I was feeling this way and definitely woke up on the wrong side of the bed yesterday. So I left the house to go on a run while my husband watched my sick children because he didn’t have to go into work until 12pm. Which was awesome – one thing to be grateful for I thought at the time.
Then a little miracle happened for my attitude that would go unrecognized by anyone watching. As I was running and stewing over all the imperfections in my life I passed a road construction worker on the side of the road wearing one of those bright orange vests and putting out cones on the street. He energetically waved at me with the biggest smile and said “Good Morning!”
My heavy heart lightened a little bit.
As I kept running I thought “I would hate working roadside all day doing back-breaking work, so I should really be grateful for my job as a mom and with Mommi.” I found it admirable that he was so happy despite having such a grueling job (even though he probably loves his job – this was just my perspective).
Then I had to run around an older couple out on the sidewalk slowly walking their dog. They were holding hands. I lost it. That morning I woke up to a crying baby and then walked past my full-length mirror with the thought “man you so fat – why can’t you ever stick to a diet or work out enough?” After I soothed my baby boy and climbed back into bed feeling haggardly as ever my husband pulled me close to him, kissed me on the forehead and said “I love you”. At the time I thought “how can you love me when I look like this?” But when I saw the older couple it all made sense – pure love transcends any shortcomings we hold ourselves to.
My thoughts started changing from a negative downward spiral to uplifting and heart-warming. And I was so grateful… it sucks spending your day down in the dumps.
Life gets hard and sometimes it feels like the odds are against us. Everyone is dealing with some kind of battle. For me, it doesn’t help to pretend everything is OK. When I fake it I usually don’t make it. Instead there are reminders all around to help me remember the good things and not dwell on the bad. Or to change the bad into something good and realize that everything is OK and life is good.
I kissed my husband and my babies with more purpose last night. Then I wrote about it in this post. There are a thousand things to be grateful for but my top 2 on the day I needed them most? That street construction worker and a sweet elderly couple. Tomorrow it may be something else or maybe I will be the influence someone needs to brighten their day. Either way, I’m grateful.

Best of ABC Kids 2015 – The Best New (and FREE) Breastfeeding Tool!

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

At the ABC Kid’s Show in Vegas the week before last I was the Queen of pump and dump! I had never left my baby boy while still breastfeeding and I didn’t want to give it up for a little 3-day work trip. So – I decided to pump. Which led to the most embarrassing breastfeeding moment of my entire life so far – I hope anyway:).

3am Road Trip to ABC Kids!

I left my house at 3am to drive to Las Vegas in time for an 8am meeting Monday morning – the 2nd day of the expo. I arrived at 7:30am exhausted but ready for a full day, and extremely engorged! I ran into the conference center, found the closest bathroom, and pulled out my single breast pump. I found an outlet and put my cardigan over to conceal my frontside because I had forgotten my trusty Covered Goods nursing cover at home (sad face). While women filed in the bathroom in a long line I just sat there on the dirty bathroom floor and pumped away trying not to make eye contact with anyone. Then my breastmilk started filling into the tubes aughhhhh! I went to fix it and my cardigan fell off exposing my bare chest. But that’s not the embarrassing part! As I scrambled trying to pick it up I dropped the single breast pump on the ground (the gross and dirty ground) and my milk started squirting milk everywhere and all over the mirror! Aughhhhh I was so embarrassed. The things we do to preserve our milk supply right??? The best part was 10 minutes later when I found out that there was a beautiful nursing lounge on the 2nd floor I could have gone to pump in comfort.

So all of this leads me to the best thing I found at ABC Kids. Ameda!!! First of all – I must be so focused on Mommi business that I totally missed that insurance companies are now offering a double breast pump FOR FREE! Did you guys know this??? What rock have I been living under? When my new best friend from Ameda came over to the Mommi booth and let me know about this great perk, I was stoked… and then destroyed because my baby is too old to qualify. Even though I knew I was missing out until my next baby came along, I decided to visit their booth and do a little video to tell you the good news and also show you all of the coolest breastfeeding tools they have available for you!

HOW FREAKING COOL IS THAT???? Actually 2 cool things – 1) Free double breast pump with most insurances (to check if yours is one of them check Ameda’s website HERE) and… 2) All the amazing innovation with breastfeeding products – and especially the double pump with clean tubes that your milk can’t fill up and that you don’t have to clean.

I love my new Ameda double breast pump!!!

I love my new Ameda double breast pump!!!

As I packed up to leave after doing our interview the Ameda ladies gave me the best surprise that made me CRY… they gave me a double breast pump!!! I was seriously so bummed out when I found out that I couldn’t get my own double pump from insurance so when they gave me this one I felt like it was Christmas. I have been using it now for the last 2 weeks and let me tell you guys… it is a GAME CHANGER. I have never had a double pump before and it is saving me so much time. The settings on the pump that you saw in the video are so easy to use and I feel like it gets my milk out so much faster. If you find out your insurance doesn’t get you a free one then go get one from Ameda and you will be in breast pump heaven … which now exists for me haha.

Erin Promo

Today is a great day! First of all – it’s my parent’s anniversary (yay Byron and Linda Elton!!). Secondly – I am featured on the Pregnancy Perfect Podcast with Kayla Geddes. Guys – she is awesome! I love what she is doing in the media to bring awareness to pregnancy-related issues. I remember when I first found out I was pregnant with JoJo I was so excited and then it hit me like a ton of bricks that this was about to be the most stressful and physically miserable 9 months of my life. We need each other to get through those tough times and Kayla really gets that info out of her guests to help others going through the same thing.

Kayla

So… if you are pregnant, thinking about getting pregnant at some point, or are done with those years of pregnancy but just want to re-live it a little – follow her podcast! I love it over here!

Thank You! Thank You!
