5 Smoothie Hacks for a Healthier Pregnancy

Sometimes a nice, tart, fruity smoothie is the only thing that sounds good when you are pregnant (or am I speaking for myself???). The problem is you still might not get everything you need nutrient-wise for your growing baby. Here are a few hacks to get the extra vitamins/minerals and protein you need, without compromising on taste for your crazy sensitive taste buds.

  1. Coconut Milk Ice Cubes – If milk isn’t doing your body good because you can’t choke it down, try this. Use water as your main liquid in your smoothie/shake, and then instead of ice cubes to make it frothy, add a few frozen coconut milk cubes instead. Freeze them and then throw them in a zip lock in your freezer to make it easier next time you pull out the blender. Coconut milk is FULL of healthy nutrients, like calcium and fats that you desperately need while growing another human.
  2. Crushed Flax or Chia Seeds -Like peanut butter needs jelly to make a delicious sandwich, you need Omegas to help make a healthy baby. But often you can’t stomach the smell, let alone the taste of fish oil. We get it – it’s awful! So try crushed flax seeds in your smoothie/shake. They will blend into your drink so smoothly you will hardly notice, and you will get those Omega 3’s you need without the nasty aftertaste and/or burps throughout the day. It’s a great alternative.
  3. Pregnancy-safe Protein Powder – You are technically supposed to get 75-95 grams of protein every single day during pregnancy (you need more if you are having more than one baby!). Even if you are a major carnivore, it’s hard to get that much when you are pregnant. So try a pregnancy-safe protein powder! If you aren’t sure about the safety, check the label. There will be a warning sign specifically for pregnant/nursing women. Or you can just try Mommi 3-in-1! It was designed for pregnant women so it’s full of good nutrition that won’t harm you or baby while you are growing together.
  4. Oats Oats and more Oats! – Carb is no longer a 4-letter word when you are pregnant! It’s time to rejoice but only if you are getting the right kind of carbs and not shoveling white toast and mashed potatoes down your throat all day (but no judgement if you are – that’s what I did when I was sick and pregnant and I had 75 pounds of weight gain to show for it). Eat better carbs to improve energy, help fill your belly, add an amazing full flavor to smoothies/shakes, and wait for it… boost milk supply if you are breastfeeding! Seriously oats do WONDERS for your breastmilk supply. If you are like me you aren’t high on oatmeal or warm food while you are pregnant and not feeling great.   5. Drink a Rainbow – I could not keep down green smoothies while I was pregnant. No matter how hard I tried to eat like a beautiful vegan goddess, my body (or baby, who knows) rejected it EVERY TIME. However, I found that when I added a frozen banana to my smoothie/shake alongside spinach and kale, I was good to go! The tangy creaminess of the ripe and frozen banana covered up the taste of the greens but I still got all the benefits. So think about adding all the colors to your shake if you can’t keep down the pure green goodness. And if you can drink the green while expecting, then more power to you!

When I was in college and definitely not trying to get pregnant, I was taking prenatals. Why, you may ask? Well I had just gone to a hair school to get a cheap haircut and the girl gave me bangs. And let’s just say that bangs were not a good look for me. So I needed my hair to grow… STAT. I went to the closest grocery store, grabbed a bottle of prenatals, and started a routine. And I’m telling you, it grew like Jack’s beanstalk.

Fast-forward 10 years and I found myself taking prenatals again, but this time I was pregnant. I was also lucky to have a lot of pregnancy-safe protein powder with prenatals and DHA lying around (thanks to Mommi:). Hair growth is not something I anticipated or even thought about while designing Mommi 3-in-1. I was looking specifically at prenatal health for the baby and mother’s benefit.

But naturally, it was a perfect fit for hair growth as well. And what I discovered was a really cool hidden benefit. The protein in Mommi was helping my hair grow just as much as the iron, biotin, copper, omega 3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C, & E found in the shake (prenatals & DHA). As I sit down to write this first blog post, I am filled with a flurry of emotions. I am nervous, excited, worried and pretty much every other emotion. I am scared and nervous to expose myself like this and to publicly call myself out on my failures and successes. I am worried I will fail and let myself down and now, others that may be following. But I am excited to hopefully inspire others who are just like me. So here is some background information on me. 

Many years ago I weighed 220 lbs, at my heaviest.  I was depressed and unhappy with where I was at.  Finally I decided to do something about it, I followed a diet plan: low calories (1200 or less a day), low fat, low carb and just really tried to shrink my portions (the american diet is SO out of proportion for the right amount of food you should eat at each meal).  Eventually once I got the hang of that, I added in an exercise program. After 18 months I weighed the lowest I have ever weighed, 138 lbs that was about the time I was getting married.

I felt so great about myself, I still had goals of toning and lowering my body fat but a few months later we found out we were expecting our first child.  We were so overjoyed, as I was informed that due to my PCOS I would have to undergo infertility treatments in order to conceive, so it was very unexpected and a very pleasant surprise!  Instantly I was extremely sick, i threw up constantly the the only thing I could keep down was carbs, carbs and more carbs.  Everything made me sick and I was living off ritz crackers.  I wasn’t sleeping either and working full-time so I was too exhausted to keep working out.  My weight gain was in the normal range and I felt like I was only gaining in my tummy, so I thought, this might not be too bad.

I ended up gaining a total of 45lbs, which my doctor said was fine, but I got very scared.  I hoped that I’d be one of those girls who just walked out of the hospital and you couldn’t even tell she just had a baby (don’t we all), and then I thought, “well, people say breast feeding helps you loose the weight, so maybe THAT will be me”… nope not the case.  I struggled and struggled with milk production, also I had an almost 4th degree tear, so my “recovery took a VERY LONG TIME”.  My baby was NEEDY, cried all the time and never let me put him down.  I was depressed and felt like a failure as a mom and woman.  Things have gotten slightly easier, but my little boy is pretty attached to me and I try to go to the gym daily but sometimes I can only get in a 15 minute workout before he looses it in the Gym Daycare and I have to take him and leave.  So sometimes I have to workout at my home, but sometimes I end up getting too tired or busy to make time for it.  I have decided I need to start making it more of a priority. So my husband and I made a friendly little wager with his sister and her husband.  We are having a weight/ body fat percentage loss competition and whichever couple looses the highest percentage gets a weekend with out kids and the losers have to watch them :).  I NEED to have a weekend without my little boy, but more importantly i NEED to feel better about myself.  Also, my husband and I want to try to have another child soon (because we aren’t getting any younger) and I want to loose the weight before so that I don’t have an even larger mountain to climb. 

So that’s me and where I am at.  I am determined to loose the 35 lbs and writing this blog will help me have some accountability.  As I hit certain goals and milestones we will be having flash sales, giveaways and special discounts, so make sure you follow and cheer me on!  We might even get lucky and have some experts chime in and give me advice and helpful hints! This week I started with a large food prep for my husband and I.  I plan on consuming no more than 1200 calories each day, drinking only water (about 90-100 oz at least).  My calories are trying to be as clean and lean as possible.  Absolutely no processed sugars and the only grains are oats and Quinoa.  This week I used my Traeger to do most of my cooking, I smoked a bunch of boneless chicken breasts, asparagus and Brussel Sprouts. I also cooked up my favorite Quinoa salad with veggies and black beans, with a lemon oregano dressing.  For breakfasts I made some Overnight Oats with added Mommi 3in1 protein.  I also cooked a bunch of hard boiled eggs for snacks and apples.  I have a large supply of nuts to help curve my hunger too.  I also baked up some Sweet Potatoes and purchased Kale, Spinach and Salmon that I will eat for dinners a couple nights a week.  I don’t want to get too sick of eating the same meals, so thats why i have those items.  I have found that I need to have lots of options prepped or planned otherwise I get bored and i give up.  The great thing about having my Traeger is that I can cook a bunch of tasty things without heating up my house and it infuses A LOT of great flavor! I like to track my calories on MyFitnessPal

EXERCISE:

Right now my goals are to workout 6 days a week.  I have a FITBIT CHARGE HR to help me track my activity.  If my little boy doesn’t do well at the gym, then i need to find time at home to get in my work out.  My goals are 20k steps a day with a 120 active minutes.  I want to focus on High Intensity Interval Training and doing some good cardio.  I plan to to an hour of HIIT training and an hour of cardio, I have great hills in my neighborhood so I plan on pushing my stroller with a baby and puppy everywhere!  Next week I will have a list of all the workouts I did and how successful I was at it.  Here are some workout’s I screen shot from Pinterest that I plan on doing this week.  Also here is a link to my favorite Kettle Bell workout, it’s a nice quick 12 minute workout for your whole body, I do a lot heavier weights though than this girl suggests.  I will also be pinning more of my favorite workouts on our Pinterest page, so look for that!

It seems there is a day to celebrate almost everything nowadays. And you know what? If it has to do with making {ehm, and eating} more food, I’m down with that. So. When I was living in Belize for a few months our cook/friend/home-away-from-home mom…Mama Kay taught us how to make Black Bottom Banana Cream Pie…and my life has never been the same. But really. You can find that recipe in this past post. However, this year I decided to celebrate a little differently…with a Banana Cream Pie Protein Shake. It may not sound quite as exciting and yummy but believe. you. me…this thing shake is delicious. Ingredients
*Makes 2 shakes
1 frozen banana 

1/2 cup skim milk
3/4 cup vanilla or banana greek yogurt 
1 pouch vanilla Mommi protein powder 
1 Tbsp. vanilla extract 
Pinch of nutmeg 
6-7 ice cubes
2 graham cracker (“sheets”/rectangles”), crushed
Whipped topping (optional) 

Directions
1. Mix together all ingredients in a blender, except half the crushed graham crackers and the whipped topping

2. Pour into two glasses and top with whipped topping (if desired), then garnish with the rest of the crushed graham crackers

A Mommi Baby Announcement!

Well here I am Mommi followers – prenatal protein shake in hand (or next to me on my desk) while writing about my exciting news. Although I’ve already come out with it on Facebook which makes everything official, I haven’t told any of you yet that I’m pregnant! It happened earlier than we had planned, but Seth and I are so thrilled to welcome Baby #2 into the world. Jordyn will be 20 months old when he makes our family a “party of 4” and she just started pointing to my belly and saying “ba-by” yesterday! So if she is going to tell everyone then naturally I am excited to spread the news as well:).

Here is why I’m even more excited about this pregnancy than EVER:
I wasn’t able to take Mommi 3-in-1 for my entire pregnancy with JoJo (my cute daughter Jordyn’s nickname). The idea for a prenatal protein shake came when I was 3 months pregnant with JoJo and sicker than I had ever been in my life! I couldn’t stand taking horse pill prenatals and even the smell of meat made me want to hurl. I searched for a protein safe pregnancy powder with no luck – they were all stamped with an ugly warning label that usually said “Do not take while pregnant or nursing” – BOO. I had also heard that liquid vitamins didn’t make you as sick, but I couldn’t find prenatals or DHA that fit the criteria. So I went to the drawing board and created Mommi 3-in-1; a protein shake that includes a complete prenatal and DHA in a chocolate and vanilla flavor. I was thrilled, but we went through so many safety tests to ensure the best quality that JoJo was 2 months old before it was finished:(. I still believed strongly in it’s power to help women and improve pregnancy nutrition, but I just wasn’t able to put it to the test during my pregnancy that inspired the idea.

Then… this happened. One morning my husband miraculously had the day off work (this usually never happens to a US Marine:). JoJo was napping and I was upstairs on a conference call when he mysteriously disappeared for about 30 minutes. He came back mid-conference call waving around an electronic pregnancy test and I just rolled my eyes at him and laughed. I was not pregnant. I knew my own body and it wasn’t happening – I felt completely normal and nothing like the way I felt with Jordyn (nauseous from the get-go, sensitive to touch and irritable to boot). For the last week Seth kept telling me he knew I was pregnant because my breath smelled different (to this day he won’t admit whether “different” meant bad or not – good husband:), but I was convinced he was crazy. My call finished and to make him get off my case I thought the least I could do was take the test and just leave it in the bathroom and resume my work day. After all, I knew it would say “not pregnant” so I wasn’t worried about sticking around for the results. I jumped on another conference call and continued on with my day. 10 minutes later Seth came in with the little white stick and shoved it in my face – it read “pregnant”. I dropped the phone in disbelief and watched him dance around in circles. He grabbed my hands, lifted me out of my chair and started dancing with me and laughing. I couldn’t believe it! We were having another baby – and I didn’t even have the motherly instinct to tell me it was true! But I was really excited nonetheless. I just couldn’t believe it.

Shake n’ Bake, Baby! After the initial shock and celebrating were over I realized something exciting – I was already taking a Mommi 3-in-1 shake every day as part of my routine, and I could now go through my entire pregnancy drinking my own product to really put it to the test!! This may not seem as thrilling to some of you reading this as it was to me:). I couldn’t wait to try new recipes, see if it actually helped with my nausea and energy, and the most importantly in my eyes – helped me not gain the 75 pounds I gained while pregnant with JoJo (when Zofran didn’t work, mashed potatoes with lots of butter and a side of mac n’ cheese always did – like 3 times a day).

So now what???? I’m now 23 weeks pregnant and am so excited to report that this pregnancy has felt SO much better than the last in every way! I’m feeling great most days and I haven’t had to swallow one horse pill. I’ve created some interesting protein shake recipes (some of which were pretty bad and some that I LOVE), and I have been able to keep up a decent level of physical activity that has helped me feel healthier and maintain a good weight this time around. And, most importantly to me, as far as Mommi is concerned, I can now say from personal experience that this product does what I wanted it to do! It is improving prenatal nutrition – at least for me, and I hope for you. That was the goal after all.

Chocolate Peppermint Prenatal Protein Shake!

Things have been crazy these past couple weeks and I haven’t been very good about posting…sorry. I did however doanother round of meal-prepping yesterday {which went really well} and I’ll post that sometime this week. Soon. But for today I’ll leave you with this awesome Chocolate Peppermint Protein Shake that I created yesterday. I used the awesome Mommi chocolate protein powder I’ve recently been raving about and it was perfect. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It’s a great post-workout treat.

ChocolatePeppermintShake

Ingredients 
1 packet chocolate protein powder 
6 ice cubes
1 frozen banana 
1/4 tsp. peppermint extract 
1/4 cup plain greek yogurt 
1/4-1/2 cup skim milk (or milk of choice) 
Dark chocolate chips, for topping (optional)

Directions
Blend all ingredients except chocolate chips in a blender or other mixer until desired consistency is reached. Top with chocolate chips, if desired and enjoy!
