Protein Absorption and Pregnancy

These days it’s popular to buy protein products that boast high grams of protein as a great thing for your body – and especially during pregnancy, many OBGYNs and nutritionists suggest up to 70 grams a day for the average pregnancy. Which is intimidating to say the least! Especially if you are in the stage of maternity where meat and other forms of protein sound awful and make you want to throw up. If that’s not you then awesome!! But nausea is a reality for up to 75% of pregnant women.

So what is the rule of thumb for protein absorption during pregnancy and frankly any time for women? 20 – 30 grams will be metabolized in the course of an hour – more than that and it will be eliminated as waste. It won’t hurt you unless you are over-consuming by a rate much higher – but the point is that it won’t help you and your pregnancy diet, either.

Some Tips to Optimize Protein Absorption:
  • Always combine your protein with some form of Vitamin C. This mostly helps absorb any iron you are intaking with your protein but it also aids in protein absorption. (Try a Mommi Vanilla shake with half orange juice/half milk for a creamsicle. You will get enough Vitamin C to absorb the 20 grams of protein in the shake)
  • Space out your protein so your body will utilize it better – Eating every 3 hours has many benefits besides nutrition during pregnancy – it can help you avoid sickness and lightheadedness that often accompanies the 40 weeks of gestation.
  • Try to walk around often and exercise appropriately to metabolize the protein and put it to work for your body. Absorption works much better with movement.

My niece, Mekayla, recently gave birth to my second great niece (yes showing my age)! Baby Cora came early because Mom was induced 4 weeks before her due date. She was diagnosed with ICP something that we do not hear too much about but now we know can happen in pregnancy.  Baby Cora is of course absolutely adorable and Mom is now at home with a newborn and toddler.

She passes along this very insightful and informative post.

Trust Your Intuition

“Shortly into my third trimester, my feet and hands started itching like crazy. At first, I chalked it up to dry skin, after all, it was such a cold winter. But then I started waking up in the middle of the night to itching so intense, I couldn’t sleep. Then I started to suspect that maybe it had something to do with the pregnancy.

Knowledge is Power

After a week of impatiently waiting for results, I was diagnosed with something called Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) which, in a nutshell, is when your liver as the Mom, is not properly processing bile through your liver. With ICP, there is typically no rash. In fact, most of the time there are no other symptoms other than extreme itching. The itching primarily concentrates in the hands and feet to start. Unfortunately, ICP leaves a risk for babies over 37 weeks of gestation to be stillborn, which is why we got to meet our precious little girl a little early.

We are both fine and, fingers crossed we will be discharged tomorrow.  Cora is passing all of the premie tests with flying colors. But ICP is a condition I wish I knew about before. It’s not overly common, but it is not rare either, and ICP is something to certainly keep in mind to never ignore excessive itching in pregnancy.”

Fight the Itch. Save a Life.

If you want to learn more talk to your OB/GYN or visit ICP Care, a nonprofit that helps pregnant mothers who experience ICP and to deliver healthy babies. ICP Care helps to connect, support, educate and empower. They offer a wonderful online community of support. Sharing is caring and if you have a story, tip or idea that you’d like to share, then please reach out.  Mommi — by moms and for moms.

Being Present

For the last year, I’ve been thinking – “it’s a good thing I’m going to have one more baby because then I can really appreciate all the stages of pregnancy.” My intentions were there. I would keep a thorough 40-week journal. Practicing prenatal yoga would become my new jam.  I was excited for awesome, healthy Mommi shakes, every day! And I’d spend time simply sitting and meditating while my baby grew peacefully inside of me. It all sounded so good, being present, practicing mindfulness and I was so excited.

Then, month after month, I wasn’t pregnant. Each test came back negative. I went to an OB/GYN here in town. He put me on the ovulation stimulant Clomid. But that did not seem to help. After the first 4 months, I was moody, and cranky, and definitely not myself. Then the acne started and I was breaking out like a pre-teen. Lots of ups and downs and there was still no “last” baby for me.

Adopting a Learning Mindset

I got pregnant so easily with my children that I never considered it might be difficult again. Yet here I am mourning the loss of the 4th pregnancy that just wasn’t happening. It was time for me to adopt a new mindset. Maybe it wasn’t the right thing to have one more baby and one more pregnancy to finally enjoy. Practicing mindfulness,  I uncovered that maybe I had not been fully present with my pregnancies in the way I wanted. And so during this journey, I was also mourning the loss of that goal or vision I created in my mind—being present, practicing mindfulness to enjoy this last pregnancy fully!

Spring the Season of Rebirth

Now that we are entering a new Spring season I am reminded to be present. I can appreciate what is right here in front of me each day. My 5 year old is starting Kindergarten soon and we will not have our days together. That saddens me in a way but it also reminds me to just be present. I won’t get back the years where we spent the days together. But I can enjoy the season we are in right now.

It’s hard sometimes to enjoy something that is often SO hard. Especially if you get sick when you are pregnant. Or maybe you are one of the lucky women that break out more than usual. Or perhaps you gain a lot more weight than you had planned. But when pregnancy won’t be happening anymore, you won’t have to mourn the loss of appreciating it as I did. Live and love the moment you are in right now. Be Present. Be Mindful. Things will evolve and change but the gift of these experiences will linger forever.

Ann Douglas, author of “The Mother of All Pregnancy Books” has a terrific article on Practicing Mindfulness During Pregnancy and Early Motherhood if you want to read more.

Lucky 13

Did you know that there are 13 vitamins essential to your survival? Some of the most important ones are the B’s.  You’ll see them listed as niacin (vitamin B3), thiamin (for Vitamin B1), and riboflavin (Vitamin B2).  Then there’s that really tricky B vitamin, especially for pregnancy, folate!  If you did not know, folate is incredibly important for your health at all stages of life. But which do you use, folic acid or folate? And is there a difference?

Now we know that all you pregnant mamas want to do all that is possible to make sure you and your baby are getting everything you need for a healthy and happy baby!  So we suggest you dig a bit deeper into the folate vitamin group. When you do you will discover that folate is most effective when converted into  L-MethylFolate (MF).

Benefits of L-Methylfolate vs. Folic Acid During Pregnancy and Why L-Methylfolate is the Way to Go!

Why are folate and folic acid important for pregnancy?  Well for healthy growth and development.  Folate and folic acid also help prevent birth defects known as neural tube defects. According to the US National Library of Medicine, “Neural tube defects are birth defects of the brain, spine, or spinal cord. They often happen in the first month of pregnancy, often before a woman even knows that she is pregnant. The two most common neural tube defects are spina bifida and anencephaly. ”

Our prenatal protein shakes not only taste great!  They also are formulated with the best possible source of each prenatal vitamin. So Mommi’s prenatal protein shakes* include   L-Methylfolate!

Here’s the Gist:

When you don’t have enough folate in your body you lack red blood cells which can make you feel tired and fatigued – sound familiar mama?

Folate comes in natural and synthetic forms. You have probably heard of folic acid, the synthetic form.  Research shows that about half of pregnant women carry gene variants that make synthetic folic acid underutilized during pregnancy. Basically, it’s not doing its job.

What is Folate’s Job During Pregnancy Anyway?

Folate is an essential nutrient best known for supporting neural tube development during pregnancy. Folate is still a must-have for anyone – not just during pregnancy. It’s involved in DNA synthesis. Without folate, you won’t have enough red blood cells, which causes a decrease in energy. And who needs that?

What’s the Best Way to Get Folate?

We always recommend food as the best source to get nutrients (if you are lucky enough to keep it down :). Try to eat lots of leafy greens like kale and spinach (these are GREAT and you can hardly taste them in Mommi shakes by the way;). Folate is also found in yeast, fruit, and legumes. The problem is you never know how legit the folate is after prepping and cooking.

A surefire way is to look for a supplement that contains folate. That way you can make sure you have enough, especially during pregnancy.

What’s Better During Pregnancy? Synthetic or Natural
Folic Acid Benefits
  • It enters your intestinal cells quicker than the natural form of folate.
Folic Acid Challenges
  • Folic Acid needs to be converted into 6S-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF) once it enters your cells before it’s useful for your body.
  • About half of pregnant women carry gene variants that make it difficult to reap the benefits from Folic Acid. This means that most common folic acid supplements are ineffective.
L-Methylfolate Benefits
  • In developing Mommi, one of our primary goals was to create a prenatal supplement that was easy to digest. We also strived to deliver vitamins that transferred quickly and effectively to the bloodstream. It’s one of the reasons we went with a prenatal shake. Liquid vitamins tend to get into your bloodstream quicker. So naturally, using the more effective form of folate for your body, L-Methylfolate – MTHF was a must.
  • L-Methylfolate doesn’t need to go through enzyme conversion.
  • For pregnant women that carry a gene variant to hinder the benefits of folate, L-Methylfolate can work.
The Bottom Line

The healthiest dietary sources of folate are found in whole foods. But let’s face it, how many leafy green vegetables can you add to your daily diet?  Sometimes our diets require a little extra boost.  L-Methylfolate – MTHF  can be a healthier alternative when you need to bump up your pregnancy supplements!

Morning Breath

I woke up the other day and my 3-year-old son came to snuggle.  He climbed up and snuggled in tightly. All of you know just how good that feels!

Can you guess what caught my attention first? His morning breath! Yup stinky 3-year-old morning breath, that was the very first thing I noticed. And you know what, I LOVED that smell. I mean it’s not like we are talking fresh, brand-new baby breath. This is toddler breath!  Most people would jerk away the moment that breath crossed their path!  Except I quietly linger and want to take all that toddler morning breath in! Better yet, I want to freeze the moment in time! Freeze this time when he is little when he climbs into my lap or onto my bed and he still wants to cuddle!

Thunderbolts

And I had that ahhh haaa, thunderbolt moment – this is TRUE LOVE. When your 3-year old’s morning breath sparks joy in your life.

People ask me the same question all the time,  how do you juggle being a loving mother that helps her kids thrive while running a company and making products that people will love (and pay for)?  Oh, and then they add, you do this all by staying sane (wait, who said I was sane?;).  The truth is that it’s really hard to be a Mom, a CEO, a wife, and a cheerleader for your family and your brand!

Let’s face it, I’m not even close to perfect. I drop balls all the time. I worry that my kids have too much screen time or that I’m not spending enough time with them.  But I learned a long time ago that the most important question to answer, for myself in order to keep going, is the “WHY”!  Why do I prioritize my life the way I do and spend time working away from these beautiful kids that I love so much—even with their stinking toddler breath.

The magic is in the motivation.

And you know what? There is no perfect why! Each one of us has a unique WHY! It could be because you want to earn a better financial living for your family. Maybe you want to contribute to your household. Or perhaps you are simply stressed to the max and need to feel like you are adding value to the world in a way that doesn’t include diapers and fishy crackers.

My favorite, because it was exactly what I went through before I started Mommi is that I had lost myself in everything. I was 200% dedicated to everyone and everything else. My time was spend making sure everyone around me was happy. But you know what,  I forgot about me. I gained a ton of weight (don’t ask), I stopped wearing makeup, I bought a bunch of stretchy dresses from Target. And well,  I lost myself. Until I found something I loved that was all ME.

Whatever it is, ask yourself the WHY! Why are you doing what you do? Be honest, be real and be raw. Write it down, text or email it to yourself, share it with your spouse or a really good friend. And remember, if part of yourWHY doesn’t sit well with you then change things up!

Decide what you can do that will make you feel excited! So excited that you cannot go to bed or get up every day!  Do what you are doing for the reasons you are doing it. Celebrate the WHY.

Love yourself, and fully love all those littles, bigs, companies, hobbies in your life that motivate you to be the best YOU

Long before I ever dreamed of having kids – mostly because I was young and single and living it up with my girlfriends – I started taking prenatal vitamins. I had heard they made your hair and nails grow faster and stronger, and who doesn’t want longer hair and stronger nails. Count me in!

Well, I was all in until the prental pill vitamins made me totally sick to my stomach! Every time I took one I felt like I wanted to throw up! And I definitely wasn’t pregnant. So immediately my gut reaction (literally and figuratively) was that vitamin pills or capsules were bad. The interesting thing? They aren’t bad perse, but I did realize early on in pregnancy that there was a better alternative – liquid prenatals.

Benefits of Drinking Your Prenatals:
  1. Your body absorbs liquid vitamins better than its pill counterparts. Think about it logically – pills sit in your stomach and slowly dissolve over time. That kind of concentration is hard on the stomach and even worse on an empty one. If you do take a pill, make sure you take it with a food source – it will result in less nausea!
  2. The body absorbs approximately 98% of the vitamins and minerals contained in liquid form. However, the body only absorbs between 3 to 20% of the vitamins in a vitamin pill or capsule. When you are growing a baby you want to get as much of the benefit from your prenatal vitamins as possible and liquid is one of the best ways to do that.
  3. Liquid vitamins bypass digestive processing and go directly into the bloodstream. Sometimes within minutes, instead of the hours it takes a traditional prenatal horsepill to dissolve. Do an experiment and put a tablet vitamin in water. Sit back and wait. How long does it take to dissolve? It’s slightly more time than when that same pill is in your stomach.
The Liquid Solution:

I created Mommi whey protein shakes for pregnancy with my OB/GYN Co-Founder, Dr. Yvonne Bohn. Prior to designing Mommi, I had found a few prenatal vitamins that you mixed with water. I took them religiously—some were good and some tasted really nasty. I did my best to get the proper nutrition while preparing my body for pregnancy, during my pregnancy with my eldest child JoJo, and afterward while breastfeeding. But when the Mommi prenatal protein powder was finished and ready for the shelves it was a game-changer in my prenatal vitamins experience.  Want to guess why?  The prenatal in Mommi is formulated so when it connects with water, it immediately transforms into a liquid source of the vitamin. And one of the best parts is the whey protein powder is the food source. So it helps absorb and gives your body that extra support that the vitamins need to not make you feel nauseous.

During my pregnancies that I had Mommi prental protein powder to take as my only prenatal vitamins I felt better, had more energy and gained less weight than the pregnancies where all I had was the prenatal pill.

So go on give liquid vitamins a try! We would love for you to feel the difference too.  Enter LIQUID10 at checkout and receive a 10% discount on your order. #DrinkYourPrenatals
