Hi mamas! We get asked ALL the time why we use whey protein for our Mommi protein shakes. First let me give you the personal story behind it. I’m vegetarian and really wanted to launch with a veggie protein. I mean, I gotta support my people right??? So at first I was bummed when the manufacturing scientists and food nutritionists we launched with put the kabosh on veggie protein before it even got started.
I wanted an explanation. It’s not that I hated whey – I actually really love it, which is evidenced by the 1-2 Quest Bars I eat every day because I’m completely obsessed with mostly the chocolate chip cookie dough one. But that’s for another blog post.
Here’s the explanation and why we went with whey (but gosh darn it I’m committed to figuring out a way to do a veggie and we are actually really close so stay tuned!!).
When we tested the veggie vs. the whey protein we were looking for clean properties in our protein because our shakes are designed specifically for moms in the stages of motherhood – women trying to get pregnant and preparing their bodies, women that are currently pregnant, women that are breastfeeding,a and women that are trying to get their pre-baby bodies back after all of it.
One thing that is a big no-no in the food industry when your product is specifically designed for pregnancy is whether or not it contains trace amounts of metals that can harm the baby. And unfortunately most protein sources that are originally grown in the ground with soil that has metallic properties will have trace amounts of metals no matter what process you put them through.
Now, most OB/GYNs will probably say it’s so trace that it’s OK. But we just didn’t feel good about putting out a product that could possibly harm your baby. I mean, the entire reason for Mommi prenatal protein shakes is to help your baby and you as a mama thrive nutritionally. So we went with whey.
The bonuses of whey protein?:
- When tested it is negative for trace heavy metals.
- It absorbs quickly.
- It tastes great with the natural sugars in the blend (only 2 grams per serving of Mommi).
- Protein is an essential nutrient you need during pregnancy (70-90 grams a day) and shakes are an easy way to get more especially if you have food aversions to meat and other products.
- Whey protein has been tested and helps alleviate nausea and we all probably know a pregnant women who would love that benefit even if we didn’t go through it (but I did. Ohhhhhh I did).
